"Peace and Remembrance"
The 2019 D-Day Conneaut Challenge Coin features the enduring legacy that will outlive all of us. Featuring the centrally located Chapel and Field of Honor at the Normandy American Cemetery in Normandy, this compelling scene is reminiscent of how the cemetery appeared many years ago. Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D-Day along with the 20th Anniversary of the D-Day Event in Conneaut Ohio, there are many features which honor the fallen. In the foreground, an unknown "Comrade in Arms", to the east, the grave marker of the first allied soldier killed on D-Day, Lt. Den Brotheridge as he led the daring raid across Pegasus Bridge, and on the west perimeter, the Medal of Honor Star which adorns 4 head stones in Normandy. Surrounding the scene are the Flags of the 12 Allied Forces that participated on D-Day. To date, there are 4413 confirmed causalities of D-Day and that too appears inconspicuously on the coin.
On the Axis side of the 2019 D-Day Conneaut Challenge Coin, the German Cemetery at La Cambe is remembered. A commanding sight upon entry to the cemetery is the statue of a German Mother, Father and Christian Cross as they look over a Field of Honor containing over 21,200 men killed during the Normandy Campaign. To the left a model of an original grave marker, to the right, what can be seen today, and at the base of the coin, the German Wound Badge. Around this scene of somber remembrance denotes in German, "Eternal Peace and Remembrance for Our Fallen".
